Jellyfish® Filter at Tauranga CBD

Client: Tauranga City Council

Specifier: BECA

As part of the Tauranga CBD public transport upgrade, TCC required a stormwater treatment solution for a new bus layover facility. The challenge was to retrofit a system into the existing stormwater network while working within tight site constraints.

The Solution

The Jellyfish® Filter was selected for its unique ability to “bubble up” into the treatment chamber, enabling treatment even where inlet levels sit lower than outlet levels. This design flexibility allowed for high-performance treatment without compromising on footprint, making it the only viable solution for this constrained site.

The Jellyfish® Filter uses unique filtration cartridges; each Jellyfish® Filter has a large membrane surface area, resulting in high flow rates and pollutant removal capacity.

The filter has a number of ‘tentacles’ that catch and remove floatables, litter, oil, debris, TSS, silt-sized particles (as small as 2 microns), and a high percentage of particulate-bound pollutants, including phosphorus, nitrogen, metals and hydrocarbons.

Design Features & Installation

  • The only solution for the constraints on this site was the Jellyfish® Filter.
  • The project required a contractor-led level survey because existing underground services were not fully documented.
  • The contractor hydrovaced around the installation location to identify existing services and ensure no damage.
  • A perfect execution by the contractor allowed for the exact inlet and outlet levels. Stormwater360 cored the inlet and outlet pipe orientations and delivered the Jellyfish® Filter unit to the site.
  • The system was installed efficiently and has since been commissioned and brought online.

Target Pollutants

  • Litter
  • Oils
  • Hydrocarbons
  • Total Suspended Solids (TSS)

Maintenance Regimen

To ensure long-term performance, the Jellyfish® system will follow a 12-month service cycle, including:

  • Sump clean-out via vacuum truck.
  • Visual inspection of filter cartridges to determine if cleaning is required. If cleaning is required, the filter cartridges are reusable by rinsing and reinstalling them.

Outcome

The Jellyfish® Filter provided Tauranga City Council with a fit-for-purpose, space-efficient, and regulatory-compliant stormwater solution. Despite the complexity of retrofitting into existing services, collaboration between the consultant, contractor, and Stormwater360 ensured a smooth delivery, protecting local waterways from stormwater pollutants generated by bus facility operations.
