Project Overview:
This project involved a new residential infill subdivision in Horsham Downs, Hamilton. The site comprises two driveways, each serving a small grouping of houses — a total of 3 houses per driveway. With space at a premium and a compact site layout, there was a strong need for a small-footprint solution that could effectively treat the stormwater runoff from these driveways and adjacent hardstand areas.
Due to the close proximity of nearby properties and a limited area available for traditional stormwater treatment methods, designing and implementing an effective solution presented a unique challenge. Furthermore, complications arose when it was discovered that the council’s main pipeline network had been installed at a different depth than originally designed, adding an additional layer of complexity to the project.
Why Filterra®?
To account for these site-specific constraints, the Filterra® Manhole configuration was identified as the perfect solution. The 1050 MH Filterra® provided a compact, low-profile treatment option that could be integrated directly into a manhole chamber, effectively delivering high-level water treatment within a small footprint.
The Filterra® was designed to treat a range of key pollutants typically present in driveway runoff, including sediments, litter, hydrocarbons, and total suspended solids (TSS). Importantly, this solution was able to achieve these water quality goals without requiring extensive land area or deep excavations — a crucial consideration given the physical limitations of the site.
Design Features & Details
The site’s main pipeline was originally set at a depth that made designing a small-footprint treatment challenging. After identifying this discrepancy, the council addressed the issue by repositioning their pipeline, which allowed the Filterra® Manhole to be installed at the required depth.
The 1050 MH Filterra® was a perfect match for this scenario, thanks to its compact dimensions and ability to be integrated directly into a manhole chamber. The two Filterra® units were successfully installed and commissioned, and are now fully functional and performing in line with their design criteria.

Maintenance Regimen:
To maintain peak performance, the Filterra® will be serviced by replacing its mulch every 6 months.
