Seaweek 2026: Toi Moana ~ Toi Tangata I Healthy Seas ~ Healthy People
Seaweek runs from 28 February to 8 March, and this year’s theme is Toi Moana ~Toi Tangata I Healthy Seas ~ Healthy People
In Aotearoa New Zealand, we have a deep connection to moana. Our oceans shape our climate, support our ecosystems, and are central to our cultural, social, and economic wellbeing. But the health of our seas doesn’t begin at the coastline, it starts much further upstream.
The Stormwater Connection
Stormwater is one of the largest pathways by which pollution reaches our waterways and coastal environments. During rainfall events, runoff can carry litter, sediment, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and nutrients from roads, car parks, construction sites, and urban landscapes directly into streams, harbours, and the ocean, often untreated.
That’s why effective stormwater management is critical to protecting the health of our seas. When we reduce pollution at the source, we protect not only aquatic ecosystems but also the communities that rely on clean water for recreation, food gathering, and livelihoods.
Protecting the Moana Starts on Land
At Stormwater360, our focus is on practical, proven solutions that protects waterways this is achieved by intercepting pollutants before they reach the natural environment. From at-source treatment systems to gross pollutant traps, sediment control, green infrastructure and more, our work supports councils, developers, and engineers in delivering infrastructure that safeguards waterways, now and into the future.
Healthy stormwater systems mean:
- Capture of litter and plastic entering marine environments
- Reduced sedimentation that smothers marine habitats
- Improved water quality for swimming, fishing, water sport and more
- More resilient urban environments that work with nature, not against it
A Shared Responsibility
Seaweek is a reminder that protecting our seas is a collective effort. Every storm drain connects to a waterway, and every design decision, maintenance practice, and pollution-prevention measure makes a difference.
By investing in smarter stormwater management and prioritising long-term environmental outcomes, we help ensure that our moana remains healthy, for us, and for generations to come.
This Seaweek, we’re proud to stand behind the message Toi Moana ~ Toi Tangata Healthy Seas ~ Healthy People, and to continue working toward cleaner waterways and stronger communities across New Zealand.
